Rumor has it that Warner Bros. is implementing a very heavy viral marketing campaign to promote and build anticipation for The Dark Knight; the sequel to Batman Begins which is slated for release in July 2008.
I saw the teaser trailer for The Dark Knight tonight while at the theater to see The Simpsons Movie. Like a usual teaser, it was tortuously minimal. No footage and only samples of dialogue between Bruce Wayne, Alfred and what appeared to have sounded like The Joker, suddenly ending with the flash of a joker playing card. The fans loved it.
Curiosity got the best of me and I began to research production of The Dark Knight. Through information gathered from various blogs, it turns out the teaser (and various homemade versions, of course) had already made it’s way onto YouTube.com and subsequently removed by YouTube on behalf of Warner Bros.
More interestingly, chatter on related forums speak of promotional and or/casting events in multiple cities including San Diego for The Dark Knight. After extensive reading, one of those sources led me to the discovery of a seemingly official promotional website for the film. At whysoserious.com, a clock counts down the hour and a poster featuring a grimacing Uncle Sam seems to be soliciting ‘qualified recruits’ and invites them to tryouts at specific world coordinates ‘when the countdown hits zero.’ The time is 10:00AM PST today and a satellite photograph indicates a small area downtown San Diego and the Convention Center as the location.
Speculation has suggested that the production and even The Joker himself might be seeking to cast extras or ‘recruits’ for the film. Other rumors suggest it to be a grand promotional event in order to build immense hype for the film during this weekend’s San Diego Comic Convention.
Whatever it may be, it’s damned interesting and it certainly has many, including myself in total anticipation for what could be the most outstanding film of 2008. Could it possibly be even better and more darker than the original Batman?

UPDATE: There is something massive happening dowtown. Several hundred participants on the ground are running through the streets of San Diego while the online community finds clues to their next location. It’s a system of odd riddles and passwords. There are messages in the sky: A phone number and laughs (HA HA HA).
The website is whysoserious.com
