This week, Google unveiled Blackle, a version of their search engine with an inky background.

The company says it’s for environmental reasons - a darker screen uses less energy and could potentially save thousands of dollars and also, important resources like oil. In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year from a eco site ecoiron proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save lots of energy. though you think it only saves a little think how many times you use google and think about the millions of people that do everyday. Although small it adds up.

Google is encouraging everyone to turn blackle as your homepage. This way not only do you save a bit of energy everytime you will be reminded about the need to save energy.

Black is the new green? Many usability experts claim light background with black text is easiest to read. Question: Does the energy saved by having a black background offset the extra time it takes to read the information on a black page with white text?

Some people may find it uncomfortable reading light text on a black background. They might find Greygle to be a better choice for them. It uses a grey background with dark text which they might find easier to read. This still allows for some energy savings while providing an easier reading experience.
