Starting with MTV Jackass, Viva le Bam, and now with the Rob and Big show MTV is known for having big name skateboarders gracing its screen. This weekend’s live Scarred event was no such thing even with big names like Motocross star Brian Deegan and semi well known pro skateboarder Kenny Hughes. Although the thought of having guys come on television live and recreate the tricks that left them scarred seems like a scary and great idea, the folks behind this live event should have thought a little harder.
The event started off well, you walk in and giant semi trucks meet you with giant great white sharks plastered on the side. We were told Metal Militia’s Brian Deegan would be performing the jump he lost his kidney to on Viva le Bam three years prior but this time over a tank of sharks. But no one could see the sharks, were they in the blow up swimming pool? Were they real? (They were). Once you get over straining your neck to see if you can get a glimpse of the sharks and realize you can’t you walk into the skate park. Hundreds of kids are lined up acting as if they were on TRL screaming and yelling for the promise of a free Scarred hat or tee. It was hot but the MTV staff had trash cans full of free water to keep the crowd going.
The show starts and you begin to see what exactly will be going on that day. MTV had flown in three guys who had hurt themselves and were on the top 10 countdown of worst falls of the season to recreate their tricks. And here is the problem. The problem was not with Kenny Hughes having to Feeble a 16 stair with only a one push platform first try. It was not with not seeing the sharks. It was with these three kids attempting to recreate stunts that had broke them off.
First we start with Fat Tony. Whom by the way was not fat. He wanted all the ladies to know that he was not fat. He changed into 3 different youth large tees throughout the 3 hour event to keep from having sweat stains from wearing a shirt that was too small in order to show off his manly BMXer physique. Fat Tony had flipped forward during a rail grind and landed straight on his face. I honestly when he recreated his trick I thought they were kidding. It was incredibly anticlimactic as the rail was barely higher than the peg of his bike and he basically just leaned into the rail and went 4 feet. After completing such a feet and changing his shirt he then walked around the skatepark asking the girls what they thought of him, and if they thought he should be on TV more. He asked me with a wink why I was so privileged to have an all access pass. For breaking his face doing a simple grind Tony sure was hyped on himself.
Next let’s go to the two skateboard guys. First was Josh Ragle who had snapped his Femur while doing an ollie over a chain. I want to explain to you how dumb this guy was. Now if you didn’t catch the title of this show it is MTV Scarred LIVE. Our camera crew as with several other media sites were unable to take Josh’s picture. Why? He was on probation and did not want evidence of him being out of the state. LIVE television buddy. LIVE television. Not only was Josh dumb he also wasn’t that good at skateboarding. And my dear CariDee English the winner of last years Americas Next Top Model didn’t know much about it either. Josh attempted to ollie a chain about 1 foot off the ground, which although a chain makes it sound more exciting is a rather simple trick. He attempted twice and did not make it either try. What’s worse is both times CariDee hooped and holler’d and highfived him for making it.
Last but not least lets go to Mitch Janusz aka “Boston”. The poor guy slipped out on a railslide and caught his testicle on a snag on the rail and ended up carrying it with him to the hospital where they were unable to save it. So not only does Mitch have only one ball he also completely embarrassed himself on national television. Mitch tried to recreate his boardslide on a 2 stair rail. Now again like the ollie is the first trick you learn to do on a skateboard this is a one of the first tricks you learn to slide on a rail. Wee Man and Mitch hyped up the trick by using more sexual innuendos then Austin Power movies put together and he attempted 3 times on television to recreate it, each time messing up. Now skateboarders don’t land every trick every time, and with the amount of pressure live television creates it is not surprising that he didn’t. But the kicker on this one is that Mitch fought with Wee-Man, a professional skateboarder that he did land it. Mitch you already lost your ball, now your dignity??
That being said Brian Deegans backflip over sharks was actually quite scary with Deegan landing on the edge of the landing ramp and having to drive off the side. And Kenny Hughes trying to land the feeble down a 16 stair with barely any runway till the security stopped him in order to allow the show to continue made for good television. But MTV – you have a wide range of extreme sports enthusiasts watching this show because you know a lot about the sports. If you want to have people skate or bike on television make sure you have them try tricks that are worth watching.

Never seen the show until the day of the event. Everyone I asked about the show said it was hard to watch, but they still watched anyways. I saw the countdown when i got home and found myself looking away at times, but never changed the channel. Scarred is one of the best reality shows on television, but Scarred Live was not shocking therefore not impressing.
Kenny Hughes was the crowd favorite for his persistence. Although MTV eventually stopped Kenny from attempting it one last time, they did give him plenty of chances to land it.
Brian Deegan’s backflip was entertaining, and what made it awesome was the fact that he was just inches from disaster.
The other three recreations (guys) were lame. What got these guys on television in the first place was there inability to land simple tricks and getting messed up in the process. So, when you put three regular guys on live television to do simple tricks, you get boring television — unless they eat it in the process — which did not happen on Saturday.
During the taping of the show, pro skater Bucky Lasek and 50 or so local skateboarders did their thing. Bucky spent an hour trying to land one trick but eventually conceded. Next time Bucky. There were a few standouts from the local talent. There were a couple guys wearing fedoras, but only one of them could skate. The kid with the green shirt who ate it early on, redeemed himself in the second half of the day by landing cool tricks.
Wee-man is way cool. In between shots he made time for the fans. Playmate Kara Monaco is so hot, she had an MTV staffer carrying her shoes for her. CariDee has a Molly Sims thing going on.
New season of Scarred just got under way and it looks good. In the new season, we will get to see what happen’s when the biggest name in Skateboarding, Tony Hawk, falls flat on his face. Ouch!
MTV Scarred airs Tuesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT
I caught the show on TV, I had seen a preview for the show here and there but never a complete episode.
The non-live portion of the show was great, my wife could not stop watching even though she was about to take a siesta.
The live show had no chance because it was unlikely these guys were going to fall so bad again. The best part about the live show was the hot chicks Kara Monaco, and CariDee – the casting director did a great job picking them out.
This is the kind of shit that ruins skateboarding. Bringing skateboarding in to these cheesey fucking shows just makes everone look stupid. You got this dude who can barley ollie trying to boardslide down a little rail off a two stair. The guy in the show lost his balls doing it on some janky skatepark rail in his home town. which was higher then the one going down the two stair and dued still couldint pull it off. He looked rediculous even attepmting it. And some kisd to olllli over a chain. thats a foot off the ground. These people can not skate they have no fucking balance. No reason they are on this show for getting broke off. they break them selves off and break bones attempting shit when they them selves cant even ride a skateboard.
Then you got Kenny Hughes. Who in my opinion has allwasy been an amazing skateboarder and still is. Skateing a rail with only one push room to get to and they MTV want him to just throw himself down it like first try, so they can get the show going.
All in all you got these shows of people who know jack shit trying to make money and something they think is a sport (skateboarding)
And people out there. Skateboarding is not a sport.
Great first pic! Hey we’ve got a youtube of Deegan’s jump at http://www.blogsandiego.com if you’re interested.
Obviously you all don’t know much about what goes on behind the scenes. Those guys were each supposed to perform their recreation stunts 2 times. They were told by MTV to miss the stunt the first time, so in reality they had one chance to make it. Although some of those guys broke the rules and tried it several times. Also, if you know anything about skateboarding, then you would know that you can’t tell how good someone is by watching them try to recreate something in one try on live tv. In any case, I doubt any of them care what is said about them, considering they do it for the love of it and not to impress the likes of people like you, and they got a free trip to San Diego.
You guys have no clue at how good josh is. I have pictures of him doing some sic moves and landing them. I also have a picture of him olling over a trunk of a car and landing it. I think you guys are jealous because cardiee english gave him so much attention and not you.
Chacina, We were there the whole day watching the skateboarding. Fat Tony made it first try and Mitch thought he made it first try. I did see Josh skating before camera crews went on and then his dissopointment when they wouldn’t let him try it a third try so they could get an interview. However they left the chain up for 30 more minutes – if it were for the love of skatebaording I wish he would have redeemed himself and tried it again. I work in skateboarding so I do know a lot about it. Yes you can’t tell how good someone is based off one trick thats why there are contest skaters and ones that do mostly street. Maybe I was a bit harsh to him but his attitude towards kids that tried to talk to him as well as the media sent to cover the event put him in a bad light. We all have our off days. He just had his on MTV.
I’m gonna have to go with Brandon on this one, skateboarding is not a sport. If it were, contests would have teams and you could pass the skateboard back and forth to your teammates. I don’t like MTV exploiting skateboarding like this. But at least the host (Jason Acuna) knows something about skateboarding.
I’m worried about Mitch’s testicle: http://www.unboundedition.com/content/view/1603/50/
Haha… Funny article. None of that stuff the author said about me was true, but still funny.
The show was completely lame and horrible, but I had a blast out there.
Sorry so many people got suckerd into watching that garbage.
yeah, that looks stupid.. skateboarding should stay out of these clowny shows, real skateboarding is not anything even closely related to this, Viva La Bam och the X-games.. All that shit need to stop, if people would want skateboarding they would have something produced and arranged by skateboarders and not some money-making clowns.. all this shit needs to stop and that is now! this makes me sick..
LMAO!! I didnt know they put a review of scarred live up….
Anyway, here is my two cents: MTV paid us to fly to san diego and skate/ride.
this was an amazing experience for all of us, i really could give a shit less if i can skate or not, i stopped skating shortly after the accident and hadn’t been on a board for probaly 5 or 6 years. in practice i landed the shitty boardslide a hundred times. im a comedian not a skater. i got to met bucky lasek, brian deegan, wee man and kenny hughes, that was amazing in itself, i shoulda jumped in the f-ing shark tank when i had the chance!
