San Diego Padres in First Place Going into All-Star Break

Greg Maddux Pitching Against Atlanta Braves

The San Diego Padres finished the first half of the season in first place with the best record (48-36) in the National League. Unfortunately, the Padres’ offense did not produce more than one run until the ninth inning when they rallied with two outs and came within one run of tying the game.

ESPN’s MLB Power Rankings list the Padres in third place going into the All-Star break. Not bad for a team that has “two or fewer runs in 24 games”, according to ESPN. Although a win is a win, the Padres are going to need to score more runs in post-season play if they want to do more than just show up.
