Have you been stopped at a light while Downtown, in Hillcrest, Mission Hills or some other area of town and a little yellow race car pulls up next to you? Well, that, my friends, is a GoCar, and you can rent one for a tour of San Diego. Maybe you know San Diego inside and out, but where do you take a relative or friend when they come to visit this gorgeous city of ours to give them a broad sense of what San Diego has to offer?
GoCar is the “world’s first GPS-guided tour car that not only directs you to your destinations, but also tells you stories about the sites. The GPS system will automatically guide your two-person car as you explore” various destinations in San Diego. After visiting the GoCar rentals location in downtown, I found out that they have two two hour programmed tours. One takes you around downtown, Balboa Park, Hillcrest, Mission Hills and closeby areas. The second tour can take you along a route that circles through Point Loma to Cabrillo Monument, to Dog Beach in OB, and other points of interest closer to the Coast.

A GoCar is a gasoline powered minicar. It can go 60-80 miles on its 1.5 gallon tank and can cruise up to 30 mph on the road. This limits you from say, crossing the Coronado bridge, but users can park and ride the ferry over and get reimbursement for their ferry toll, if they so desire. The current fleet is relatively small, however a shipment of 20 additional cars are just waiting for pickup from Long Beach to San Diego, meaning that within two weeks, there will be a fleet of almost 30 GoCars available for your enjoyment.
Rental rates for the GoCars are $44 for the first hour, $34 for the second ($78 for the full two-hour tour, $24 each for the third to fifth hour, and any time over the 5 hours is no additional charge. GoCars are considered the equivalent of a motorcycle on the road, so you must wear a helmet during your cruise, but you can park anywhere along the routes and the GPS will pick up when you get back and set off to your next destination. You can also just pop in a CD and cruise off the tour if you’re familiar with the area.
GoCars has a deal with Gold Star Events that will get you 50% off your two hour rental during certain rental periods. To join GoldStar, click here.
GoCars can be rented at the downtown location at 639 Kettner (between G and Harbor Drive, near Seaport Village) or at the Old Town location at 2415 San Diego Avenue. Since summer is picking up, reservations are recommended. Call 619.696.9002 or 1-800-91-GoCar or go to the GoCar website for additional information.

I’ve seen the GoCars zipping around the Gaslamp. The people always look like they are having fun. I wish they had these here in Puerto Vallarta. A guided GPS tour of the old part of Vallarta would come in handy right now.
When I get back to San Diego, I ‘ll post pictures from my trip to the new sandiegoish.com/community
Sharing is fun.
