It was a about a year ago at Voz Alta in Downtown, where Bill Caballero started his Jazz Jams on Thursday nights. Caballero’s group who consist of Victor on congas (also plays with B Side players), Andy on Bass, Alan on Piano, Charlie on Drums and Bill on trumpet.

8pm, the group started the night off with a set of smooth jazz that was just the tip of the iceberg. As the night progressed the beats just got more foot tapping. Caballero’s group has guest musicians come in and sit in for some songs. There were sax, conga, trombone and guitar solos; it was a performance like no other. The beats got louder and faster and the solos where amazing.

Musicians ranged anywhere from their mid teens to a young sixty. About 50 people attended last Thursday’s event. According to groups Conga Player, Victor, the first time they played, he said it felt like two people showed up to the performance. The following week about five showed up. Soon the crowd starting getting bigger as the they attracted customers from Landlord Jim’s bar, a dive bar with happy hour from 8-10pm.

I personally recommend this event to those who truly enjoy art, music, and really reasonably priced drinks. Bill Caballero’s Latin Jazz Jam is an event for who have been looking for and alternative to the loud, overcrowded and overpriced Downtown Thursday nights.
