New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale: Bottle or Draft?

By Mario Lozano · May 23rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

Fat Tire Beer It wasn’t to long ago that New Belgium’s Fat Tire Amber Ale became the beer of choice for San Diegans. From downtown to Eastlake to North County and everything in between, Fat Tire has displaced many of the local beers on tap, including my personal favorite Karl Strauss’s Amber Lager.

Last week, I noticed that some bars switched: they now serve Fat Tire in bottles. And then two nights ago, I bought a 20oz bottle of Fat Tire at Albertsons. I had a New Castle the night before.

I opened the bottle and took a swig without thinking about it twice. But as the toasty, biscuit like-malt flavors slid down my throat, I found myself checking the label on the bottle to confirm that it was a Fat Tire. Wow! I personally think Fat Tire beer taste so much better in a bottle than as a cold draft. I know what your thinking: give me a draft over a bottle. I used to think every beer taste better as a draft, because it loses (changes) flavor during bottling process. However, the change here is for the better. Fat Tire is one of the few beers that actually taste better in a bottle. Maybe this is why some local bars are switching from kegs to bottles.

What do you think? Draft or bottle? Post your opinion as a comment below.

Remember, if you are going to drink, drink responsibly.

I personally agree that Fat Tire beer is definitely becoming a San Diegan favorite beer. However while very few people I know will order bottle over draft, I still have to agree that most beers I have consumed taste better on draft. I will take Mr. Lozano’s word for a bottle of Fat Tire, which just might be one of those beer that taste better bottled. Drink Responsibly.

Tiny’s Tavern on Voltaire in Ocean Beach sells the 20 oz bottle for 5 dollars. But, you can buy 1 , and then hit up ABC liquor on the corner ($2.50) the rest of the night and bring them into the bar and the tendress will be none the wiser.
