Renowned muralist Mario Torero last week unveiled his latest public-art project: “City of the Future” in Chula Vista at the Gateway Complex. The mural was inspired by the art of Bianca Ellerston, winner of the MountainWest Real Estate and South Bay Family YMCA Art Mural Contest.
Jim Pieri, President & CEO of MountainWest Real Estate, Tina Williams, executive director of Southbay YMCA, and Jerry Rindone, Chula Vista City Council member presented each of the 7 winners (ties for 4th and 5th place) of the art contest with a government scholarship bond that could be used after the age 18 to any accredited educational institution of their choice. Nearly 40 contest entries were received.

The mural was dedicated as part of Chula Vista’s cultural public art works. Jim Pieri and Jerry Rindone describe the event as “monumental” for the city of Chula Vista.

The contest was an opportunity for the children of Chula Vista ages 12-18, invovled in some way with any South Bay Family YMCA sponsored program, to express their “Future Visions of Chula Vista”. A representative from Congressman Bob Filner’s office was present for the ceremony. However, no one from Sweetwater Union High School District or Chula Vista Elementary School District were present. For something this monumental, at least one of the school board members should have shown up. There is a petition (movement) to change the status quo by requiring that school representatives live in the community in effort to get better representation and involvement from them.
There was also an art exhibition that included pieces from Mario Torero, Crol, Chor, and the 40 contest entries. The exhibition was inside an available retail space at the Gateway complex.
