Rookie NASCAR driver Michael McDowell walks away after slamming into a wall at speeds of over 180 mph during a qualifying run at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday. McDowell’s car rolled over 7 times and caught on fire before coming to a stop.
McDowell’s ability to walk away from the crash was aided by recent NASCAR efforts to make the sport safer. The organization has installed safer barriers (soft walls) around racetracks and switched to new race cars introduced last year, which are known as “Cars of Tomorrow.”
