What do you do after giving up the game losing home run with two outs in the ninth inning? If you are Trevor Hoffman you come back the next day and save the game. Hoffman picked up his 526th career save today when the Padres beat the Astros 3-2 to close up their first series of the year with a 3-1 record.
Kevin Kouzmanoff’s two-run homer in the first inning looked as if it might be enough to give Randy Wolf his first win as a Padre. When Wolf left the game in the sixth inning the Padres had a 2-1 lead, but reliever Enrique Gonzalez gave up an RBI double to J.R. Towles in the top of the seventh inning. That run cost Wolf the win, but in the bottom of the seventh Scott Hairston crossed home plate off of a Tadahito Iguchi single. With the Padres leading 3-2 in the ninth inning Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect inning to earn the save.
Trevor Hoffman Gives Up Four Runs One Night Earlier

The air must have been light Wednesday night because Greg Maddux, who started the game for the Padres, gave up three home runs through six innings. The Padres went into the ninth inning looking for their third straight win over the Astros but Trevor Hoffman could not close out the Astros. Hunter Pence drove in Jose Cruz Jr for the tying run. Later Lance Berkman stepped up to plate with a 3-1 count and smashed the ball into center field for the three run home run that was enough to give the Astros the win.
The Padres begin a three game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are one game back, Friday night at 7:05PM.
