Padres on a Streak, Beat Astros 2-1

By Merrick Lozano · April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

The Padres are on a two game win streak after edging out the Astros 2-1 Tuesday night. The Padres took the lead in the 4th inning when Scott Hairston hit a two-run homer in the fourth, but the Astros did not go down without putting up a fight.

Trevor Hoffman was brought into the game in the ninth inning to save the game for Chris Young who struck out three, gave up five hits, five walks and one earned run. Padres fans got a little scare in the ninth inning when Hunter Pence got to first on an infield single but Hoffman managed to earn his 525th career save by striking out Lance Berkman to end the game.

The Houston Chronicle managed to get a great sound bite out of Astros manager Cecil Cooper when asked by reporters if he saw any progress in the club’s loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

“I did,” he said. “We scored.”

The Padres get another chance to extend their streak against the Astros at 7:05PM tonight at Petco Park. Wandy Rodriguez, a lefty, will take the mound for the Astros, while Greg Maddux will pitch for the Padres.

This series has been such a treat for Padres fans that the grounds crew guy danced in Jubilee.
