There are many bands out of Canada that are doing quite well. Personally, I love quite a few bands from Canada including; Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Hot Hot Heat, Metric and Stars just to name a few.
Tonight, October 29, Final Fantasy (another good band from Canada) will be at The Beauty Bar. Final Fantasy is violinist Owen Pallett’s side project. With a name like Michael James Owen Pallett-Plowrigh, you would think there would be an esquire attached somewhere. By shortening his name, Pallett made things easier for those who announce his name when he wins awards. Owen Pallett won the Polaris Music Prize in 2006, which in turn earned him Canadian Album of the Year for the Final Fantasy album “He Poo’s Clouds.”
Now you know a little bit about Owen Pallett and his side project Final Fantasy. What you may not know is that he also plays with Arcade Fire. I saw Final Fantasy open for Arcade Fire at the Casbah several years’ back and it was an amazing show. It was funny, because once Arcade Fire graced the stage; I noticed one of the violinists was from the opening band.
Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) not only tours and performs with Arcade Fire but also orchestrated the string sections for Arcade Fire’s “Funeral” and “Neon Bible.” Final Fantasy puts on a great show. Pallett is very entertaining and makes fun of himself at times which makes the show fun as opposed to boring. They say the relationship between the violin and the violinist is like a marriage, this marriage will last a lifetime.
