Being a San Diego native and more specifically a native of Point Loma, seeing what used to be The Sportsman’s Lodge Motel transformed into The Pearl Hotel is refreshing. The Sportsman’s Lodge Motel was built in 1961 and after they closed it down, it remained vacant for years. It was a nice reminder of the past but after a while, it became an eyesore.
Lucky for us that live in Point Loma and for those that come visit, The Pearl Hotel has added style and a much-needed facelift to the Lodge that once graced the corner of Fenelon and Rosecrans. Granted you will be paying a bit more to stay in this boutique style hotel than you would have at the Lodge (rates were between $32-$34 per night!) but it is definitely worth it. Rates at The Pearl Hotel start at $159. You would think with the attention to detail, mid-century modern flair and other upper scale amenities, it would cost more to stay at the intimate 23 room hotel. Fortunately, while staying at The Pearl you get boutique style without boutique price. You can rent out the whole hotel or just a room. The restaurant is also available for corporate events, parties, etc. As a bonus, if you decide you want to stay at The Pearl after enjoying cocktails and fine cuisine, you can “Play & Stay” for $79 + tax. At midnight, based on availability, you get the “Play & Stay” rate. Another bonus, the staff is friendly and attentive. Check The Pearl Hotel website for all of the luxury amenities the hotel has to offer.
One of my favorite areas of the hotel is a place where you can chill, kick your shoes off and play games in a setting that oozes with great design.

Here is a photo I took while I was there a few weeks ago. This posh spot is separate from the bar/restaurant area. It is a great place to relax with your friends and enjoy conversation or chess.
Ok, now that you have an idea about the hotel rooms, there is more! They have a great selection of music that sets the ambiance for the hotel. The pool area is ultra cool and has an intimate, vintage Palm Springs vibe about it. The restaurant serves a menu of upscale cuisine created by The Pearl’s consulting chef Corey Oliver Heath. The restaurant and bar both serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Arron L. Reynolds (Onyx, Thin), the general manager of The Pearl Hotel says, “We’ve made sure that the soothing visual appeal of The Pearl Hotel is always accompanied by warm and friendly service, great food and drink, and fun and innovative events.”
Speaking of events, here is what’s going on at The Pearl Hotel during the month of October. The Pearl has started a great night called “Dive-In Theatre.” This weekly “cinema social” is free and happens every Wednesday from 8p-Midnight. Movie starts at 8:00 pm / Full menu served until 10:00 pm / Bar open until midnight
Here is the October film schedule:
October 17: The Graduate (1967)
October 24: Sideways (2004)
October 31: Halloween Double Feature:
The Shining (1980) and Beetlejuice (1988)
And last but not least, happy hour. Who doesn’t love happy hour? At The Pearl Hotel, happy hour is from 5p to 7p. You get half price on some of the appetizers on the menu (my favorites are the rock shrimp nachos, cuban cigars and brie) and $3 draft beer.
Take a drive down Rosecrans to experience the newest hotel in Point Loma to offer luxury and style. The Pearl Hotel definitely lives up to its mantra: “Down to Earth, Up with Style.”

For now, The Restaurant at the Pearl Hotel will only be serving happy hour/dinner – breakfast and lunch will happen in the near future.
