North Park Fashion Day 1: Thistle / Photos by Victor Santana
I showed up last night to the Bluefoot Bar at 8pm sharp to see the first day of North Park Fashion Week. I was excited it was having a show at both 8 and at 10. Sometimes you can’t see the later show because of crowding so I was excited to both see a mellow-ish show and be able to make plans later for after the show. I walked in and noticed it didn’t seem at all like it was going to start on time so I walked to the bar and ordered 3 shots of tequila and 3 Coronas and was excited that my tab was not as outrageous as it was when seeing the Reef show at the House of Blues and that my Corona actually came in a bottle. The bartenders are great there, never rude and pour strong drinks. After a weekend of downtown ASR parties I really appreciate a North Park drink. If you go in give John Kelley or any of the other bartenders a high-five.
The first show started at almost 9:30 and I was defiantly disappointed. I understand that Marc Jacobs can make people wait two hours… but North Park? I was ordering another beer when I noticed the fashion show started. No announcement – no nothing. I believe it was all from Thistle and it was extremely short. Although I loved the high waisted pants, both pair that went down the runway were either not buttoned or zipped all the way. High waisted jeans are yes, made for skinny girls.. but they fit on the skinniest part of your waist so I was trying to imagine who could wear these pants if such skinny models couldn’t even fit into them? Were they the wrong size or were they trying to wear them on their hips too low? Thistle (was this the Thistle show?) used a lot of asymmetrical lines for their collection and I did love the grey shirt/dress but again I am not sure if it was the model being to tall or the outfit but when the model walked down the runway… well lets just say it was a bit short and the front row saw too much. All in all I think the show was really good and maybe the models weren’t fit before hand. I loved the pale yellow onesie and the Chanel knock off bracelet that said Fancy, that I assume can be bought at Neighborhood. I loved the pairing of the mens items, the shorts with the non-puffy maroon vest and Tom’s shoes looked great but I could have done with out the extreme makeup on the guy. He had on more than the ladies. The hair was done well – super cute, asymmetrical to match the clothing and not overdone or under done. The Shark Attack boys were DJing and I thought the music was fitting – However I kept hearing the same part of a song that made me, and several other people turn around thinking the show was going to start.
I was disappointed that we couldn’t stay for the next showing, I tried to hold out but it was after 10 and the show hadn’t began and I was promised somewhere at 10. A word to the next two nights. The flyer makes it look as if there is two shows. One at 8 that would include both designer and boutique and another at 10 that would include both designer and boutique. I know many people missed the first showing despite the fact it ran an hour and a half late because they assumed the same thing. Show up at 8 or show up at 10. Not both. Waiting two hours between five minute shows is a bit extreme. Can anyone tell me if this will change or should I just assume I need to be there from 8-12?
