With over 20,000 Kebab shops in the UK, 12,000 in Germany, and 1,000 shops in Finland, it was only a matter of time for San Diego to finally get an authentic Kebab Shop.
If you’ve never heard of or tasted an authentic Kebab, you’re really missing out. If you don’t trust me than just ask the people of Germany and they’ll tell you how good Kebabs are. The total numbers of kebab shops in Germany have higher revenue than McDonalds, Burger King and Wienerwald combined! The annual sales of döner kebabs in Germany total almost $2 billion with 720 million döner kebabs sold every year. I know what you’re all thinking; “enough tell us what the hell is a Kebab is and why should I try it!”
Well we’ve finally managed to get one in San Diego. Located in San Diego’s up and coming East Village neighborhood; The Kebab Shop opened it’s doors not to long ago. Bringing the authentic European Kebab experience to SoCal. The menu consists of different types of Kebabs; which originated from Turkey but became popular all over Europe. Heres the 411 on the menu items for all you non-Kebabers.
• Döner Kebab– is what I like to call a “Turkish Burrito” It looks just like a burrito but tastes much different. A Döner Kebab consists of your choice of Lamb, Chicken or Falafel wrapped in flatbread (tortilla-ish looking) with cabbage, cucumbers and a special sauce that hits the spot. The meat is also seasoned very well giving it an exotic flavor. If you like your food a little spicy don’t forget to ask for a side of hot sauce.
• Shawarma – is the same exact thing ingredients as the Döner but instead of being wrapped in flatbread it is served in a sandwich form. If your Mexican like me you’ll be quick to call it a Torta but it’s really not.
• Shish Kebab – probably the one you’ve already heard of. The Shish Kebab is a Turkish skewer with your choice of chicken, shrimp, or salmon. All served with a bomb saffron rice and fresh salad. FYI you can substitute the rice for French fries but would recommend trying the rice.
• Iskender Kebab – this is much like the Döner and Shawarma but sans the flatbread and sandwich bread. It is served on a plate.
If your vegetarian this is a great spot to dine. The falafel contains no meat what so ever and is just as yummy. So if you happen to be in the East Village maybe for a ball game or for whatever reason, consider stopping by the Kebab Shop for a quick and inexpensive meal that will leave you wanting more.

I am looking forward to trying out the Shrimp Shish Kebab, unfortunately they were out the day after Labor Day. The place did look nice though and the food on Mario’s plate looked very fresh.
